Remember: your cue that an Echo device is on an active call—and someone is listening on the other end—is the green spinning ring.

USE ALEXA DROP IN AS A TWO-WAY INTERCOM

Alexa’s “Drop In” feature is a quick way to establish communication between a pair of Echo devices, essentially turning them into a two-way intercom. So, if you have multiple Echo devices at home, you can use them to Drop In from one room to the another. But where Drop In really gets interesting, is that with the proper permission, you can ask Alexa to Drop In on another Echo device that belongs to someone else—such as a family member or friend. This can be a very handy way to help keep tabs on an elderly parent, for example, even if they don’t live with you.

The important thing to remember is that unlike a call you place through Alexa, a Drop In automatically connects you to another Echo device without someone having to “pick up” on the other end. For this reason, you can’t Drop In on an Echo device that doesn’t belong to you unless the device owner has granted you permission to do so. (To help distinguish Drop In from ordinary Alexa calling, it may help to remember the former as the feature with the potential to eavesdrop.)
